Heartbreak on South Africa’s roads: safety of passengers should never be overlooked
Statement by Zandile Phiri, Acting Secretary General of the United Democratic Movement The United Democratic Movement (UDM) is deeply saddened by the devastating loss of lives following the shocking bus accident that occurred on the N1 North, near Ingwe Lodge in Limpopo, yesterday, and the taxi accident that left 18 children injured on the N3 highway near the Mariannhill Toll Plaza in KwaZulu-Natal this morning. Our thoughts and sincere condolences go out to the grieving families, survivors, and everyone affected by these painful incidents. These tragedies are a tender reminder of how fragile life is. Moments of national sorrow such as these remind us of the ongoing challenges facing our transport systems. Every journey, whether short or long, depends on a transport network that must be both reliable and safe. Consequently, we must confront the conditions that allow some of these accidents to happen. South Africa’s transport infrastructure and enforcement mechanisms must be strengthened as a matter of urgency. It is imperative to have regular and consistent vehicle inspections to determine the roadworthiness of cars, buses, taxis, and scholar transport vehicles. Equally important is ensuring that drivers transporting passengers, particularly schoolchildren, hold valid Professional Driving Permits (PrDPs) and comply fully with all safety requirements. Regular vehicle inspections and strict adherence to roadworthiness standards are critical in preventing such tragedies. The safety of passengers should never be overlooked. As a country, we must continue to strengthen our transport infrastructure and promote a culture of safety and accountability. These tragic incidents should compel authorities to prioritise transport safety and to reinforce monitoring systems. Such measures are essential to a broader national commitment to safeguarding lives on our roads.

Bantu Holomisa on the passing of Ambassador Nathi Mthethwa
Statement by President of the United Democratic Movement, Deputy Minister Bantu Holomisa, MP I am deeply saddened by the passing of His Excellency, Ambassador Nathi Mthethwa, and I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. Ambassador Mthethwa served our nation with distinction, demonstrating unwavering dedication to advancing South Africa’s diplomatic and strategic interests. His professionalism, wisdom, and commitment earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and international partners alike. During my recent visit to the French Republic for the IHEDN Forum on the African Continent (FICA) and related bilateral defence engagements in June 2025, Ambassador Mthethwa, through the Embassy, provided vital logistical support, mobility arrangements, and a comprehensive briefing to our delegation prior to departure. His guidance and insights were invaluable in ensuring that our engagements were well-prepared, strategically aligned, and impactful in representing South Africa’s interests. The meticulous support he provided, including coordinating transportation, scheduling, and access to key stakeholders, significantly contributed to the success of our working visit to France, making the trip smooth, effective, and productive. One thing Ambassador Mthethwa always never forgot to mention whenever we were in the same room, to audiences who cared to listen, is that he received his early military training under the supervision of the Transkei Defence Force officers, where he completed a special military training course in Port St. Johns for ANC liberation movement operatives during the struggle. That formative period helped shape his disciplined approach to service and his deep understanding of strategic defence matters. This early experience informed the wisdom, perspective, and professionalism he later brought to his distinguished diplomatic career. The United Democratic Movement mourns the loss of a devoted public servant and a true patriot. Ambassador Mthethwa’s contributions to strengthening South Africa’s bilateral relations and advancing defence diplomacy will leave a lasting legacy. I extend my prayers and deepest sympathies to his family, loved ones, and colleagues. South Africa has lost a remarkable diplomat and a servant of the people. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

UDM Eastern Cape mourns the loss of UDM Cllr Thobile Gidigidi
Statement by Bulelani Bobotyane, Provincial Secretary of the UDM in the Eastern Cape It is with profound sorrow that we have learned of the untimely passing of our comrade and leader, Councillor Thobile Benjamin Gidigidi, affectionately known to many as Sir Gidz. On behalf of the United Democratic Movement (UDM) in the Eastern Cape, I extend our deepest condolences to the Gidigidi family, friends, and the broader community of Mnquma. Councillor Gidigidi served the people of Mnquma Local Municipality with unwavering dedication and principled leadership as the UDM’s Chief Whip in Council. His passion for justice, his fearless voice in defence of the marginalised, and his enduring commitment to clean and ethical governance have left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of working alongside him. Sir Gidz was more than a colleague. He was a brother, a mentor, and a true servant of the people. He brought not only discipline and integrity into Council chambers but also a unique warmth and humour. Who could forget his famous phrase during meetings when trying to keep order and bring focus: “ninganukiselwa yi barbecue sauce.” It was a light-hearted yet firm reminder not to get distracted or prolong debates unnecessarily. It was in these moments that his rare ability to lead with both authority and humanity shone through. As we mourn, we also celebrate a life lived in service of the greater good. May his spirit continue to inspire us to carry forward the ideals he stood for, which include humility, service, and unwavering commitment to the people.

UDM condolences on passing of Pope Francis
Statement by Nqabayomzi Kwankwa, MP, UDM Deputy President and Leader in Parliament The United Democratic Movement (UDM) sends its heartfelt condolences to the Catholic Church, the Vatican and all Catholics around the world following the passing of His Holiness, Pope Francis. We honour his life of service, humility and compassion. Pope Francis was a leader who stood for peace, justice and care for the poor and marginalised. His commitment to interfaith dialogue and the right to freedom of religion or belief. His efforts to bring people together, regardless of their background, will be remembered for generations to come. He was against all wars across the globe. He was a champion of social justice and the social gospel for all peoples. The UDM acknowledges the deep spiritual guidance he provided to millions across the world. His legacy will continue to inspire people of all faiths and Christians around the world. The UDM extends its heartfelt condolences to the South African Catholic community and Catholics worldwide during this time of mourning. We honour his spiritual leadership and the profound inspiration he offered to billions of people worldwide. UDM condolences to families of R21 bus crash victims and urges road safety compliance
Statement by Zandile Phiri, Acting Secretary General of the United Democratic Movement The United Democratic Movement (UDM) is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of twelve lives in a devastating bus crash on the R21 near OR Tambo International Airport in Gauteng today. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families and loved ones of the deceased during this incredibly difficult time. We also extend our thoughts and prayers to those who have been injured and wish them a full and speedy recovery. This heartbreaking incident follows two other recent bus crashes in KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State, bringing the total number of fatalities to nineteen in just two weeks. These tragedies highlight the urgent need for stricter road safety measures and responsible driving. We urge all road users, especially public transport operators, to always prioritise safety by: 1. Obeying all rules of the road i.e. the speed limit, road signs and safe following distances must always be observed. 2. Ensuring roadworthiness of vehicles by thoroughly checking them before every trip to prevent mechanical failures, especially tires and brakes. 3. Resting when tired as fatigue is a major cause of accidents, drivers must take regular breaks to ensure they are alert and able to react to road conditions. Losing lives on our roads is unacceptable. The UDM calls on the authorities to intensify road safety campaigns, enforce stricter vehicle inspections and ensure that those responsible for public transport uphold the highest safety standards. May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may their families find strength during this painful time.

Condolences on the passing of Pik Botha
The first time the late Pik Botha and I spoke over the phone was with the removal of George Matanzima and Stella Sigcau from power. I explained that on both occasions there was just cause, because of the corruption they were involved in. He again contacted us when he and FW de Klerk had concerns that the Transkei military government was taking unilateral decisions when we decided to work with the liberation movements. I knew Pik Botha as a bold negotiator and an intelligent opponent. He was one of the few National Party leaders who stood up and said that the system of Apartheid will not work. Even during PW Botha’s time, when saying such a thing would have been regarded as treason of the white nationalist cause. We offer our condolences to his family, friends and his organisation.
