The UDM is infuriated by the Gauteng Department of Health after openly endorsing and acknowledging working with a certain Dr. Matthew Lani as an intern at Helen Joseph Hospital in 2022 without verifying that he was a competent doctor, putting our citizens’ lives in danger.

The Gauteng Department of Health now says that this bogus doctor infiltrated the system by posing as an employee of Helen Joseph Hospital, where he supposedly went around the hospital hallways curating content for social media.

The UDM surprised that it took social media for the Gauteng Department of Health to realise Dr. Mathews Lani is a forger.

Because of such carelessness, corruption, and cadre deployment, we find ourselves as a country being put in grave peril by a siege of phony doctors.

The UDM applauds the University of the Witwatersrand for fast verifying that there are no records of Dr. Matthew Lani graduating as a medical doctor from their institution.

According to the Health Professions Act No. 56 of 1974, practicing without being registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa is a criminal offence, and anyone who uses any name, title, description, or symbol indicating or calculated to lead persons to believe that he or she is the holder of any qualifications of which they are not is guilty of an offence punishable by fine, imprisonment, or both.

Over the course of three years, the HPCSA and the police detained 124 fake doctors around the country as part of an ongoing campaign. The UDM hopes that more arrests will be made shortly in order to reduce the risks to our people’s lives.
