Dear Mr President

Bulldozing Electoral Matters Amendment Bill through Parliament is cruel and sounds the death knell for democracy in South Africa

1. The fact that your cabinet has approved the Electoral Matters Amendment Bill is a selfish, cruel and reprehensible act just before the 2024 National and Provincial Elections and will have the most negative effect on multi-party democracy in South Africa.

2. Now that the ruling party has been fingered in the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of State Capture (the Zondo Commission) and they have been exposed for illicitly using state resources they want to go back to a legitimate source for funding and, it is acting in the most outrageous manner using its majority to bulldoze legislation through at the eleventh hour. Why this haste right before elections taking money from other political parties to beef up your party’s electoral chances. This is selfishness of the highest order. If you were honest in your exercise the ANC should be paying back the money they have stolen from the state as exposed by the Zondo Commission.

3. We call on you to stop this folly for the good of South Africa at least until after elections when there is a new government in power. If not, we will, together with other political parties, seek a legal remedy.

Yours sincerely
Mr Bantu Holomisa, MP
President of the United Democratic Movement
