The United Democratic Movement (UDM) expresses its deepest condolences to the families affected by the recent tragic events in South Africa. Our thoughts and prayers are with the grieving families during this difficult time.

As South Africa mourns the loss of lives, we stand in solidarity with the affected communities and call for a collective effort to support the affected families in their quest for closure and justice.

The UDM acknowledges the need for transparency and support in the aftermath of such a tragedy. We commend the South African government’s decision to publish a comprehensive list of the names of the deceased. This move will not only provide clarity to the families but also ensure that they can begin the process of mourning and healing.

Furthermore, we urge the South African government to collaborate closely with the Ambassadors of African countries affected by this tragedy. This cooperation will be crucial in assisting families to identify their loved ones and navigate the necessary procedures.

In this trying time, the UDM emphasises the importance of preserving the dignity of the deceased by ensuring they are buried in their respective home countries. We call upon the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) to play a pivotal role in facilitating the repatriation and dignified burial of the deceased. This initiative will help provide closure to the families and honour the memory of those who have tragically lost their lives.

The recent events have also brought to light the issue of hijacked buildings in the City of Johannesburg. The UDM supports the City’s decision to conduct a thorough audit of highjacked buildings. It is crucial that those responsible for these unlawful activities are held accountable for their actions. The law must take its course to ensure justice is served, and the safety and well-being of residents are upheld.

The UDM remains committed to promoting unity, transparency, and accountability during these challenging times. We encourage all relevant authorities and organizations to work together to provide support to the affected families and to address the underlying issues contributing to such tragedies.
