Dear Mr Steenhuisen

Request that an amendment be made to the Democratic Alliance’s motion of no confidence in cabinet: South African lives matter more

Regarding the motion of no confidence that the Democratic Alliance (DA) have tabled in cabinet in terms of section 102(1) of the Constitution over, in essence, their lack of support of the President’s economic reforms, the United Democratic Movement (UDM) would like to request the DA to consider an amendment. We would like to suggest the addition of the matter of the death of 354 people last July during the mayhem in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.

As it happens Professor Sandy Africa’s team identified an unequivocal failure of the country’s police and intelligence services as one of the root causes, but categorically stated that “Cabinet must take overall responsibility for the events of July 2021.”

In the UDM’s view South African lives matter more than unimplemented economic promises and this facet could be included in the DA’s motion. We hope that you will consider our proposal.

Yours sincerely

Mr Bantu Holomisa, MP
President of the United Democratic Movement
