The United Democratic Movement is extremely appalled at the rate of killings taking place in South African. The number of people getting killed on daily basis are incredibly high. Women and children go missing hourly according to the stats the South African Police Service released. The mass shootings are happening all over the country.

In the latest child killing that has shaken the nation, a 4-year-old girl, Bokgabo Poo, was kidnapped, raped and mutilated.

While crime levels remained proportionately flat in the quarter compared to the same period the year before – up slightly by 1.1% for reported community crimes, some crime categories showed alarming increases, this included murder, a new pandemic the nation is faced with. The police data showing an 11.5% increase in the crime year on year. This has become a norm which is not acceptable.

The UDM calls on the Minister of Police Bheki Cele to stop hosting talk shows, the so- called “Imbizo”, wasting energy and state resources but he must allow the National Police Commissioner and his teams to do the work they were trained for, to defend and protect the citizens.

It sad that some police officers are greedy and hellbent to take bribes from offenders to make dockets vanish so that they can get away with all sorts of crime they might have committed.

UDM and other opposition parties have questioned Police Minister Bheki Cele’s style of leadership on numerous occasions, calling for his resignation as the country is engulfed in crime which has been experienced before. He is unfit for the job. It is a pity he is not answerable to the nation but to his own party, the ANC which messes everything it touches.
