Statement by Zandile Phiri, Acting Secretary General of the United Democratic Movement

The United Democratic Movement (UDM) welcomes the recent appointment of our leader and Deputy Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Bantu Holomisa, MP, to the National Conventional Arms Control Committee (NCACC), announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

We view this appointment as a recognition of Mr Holomisa’s distinguished career and vast expertise, which will bring a wealth of experience to the NCACC as it undertakes critical oversight functions in arms control and related national security matters.

Mr Holomisa’s extensive knowledge in governance, combined with his unwavering commitment to integrity, transparency, and accountability, makes him an invaluable asset to this vital committee. His background as a former member of the Transkei Defence Force and a long-standing advocate for ethical leadership and sound governance aligns closely with the NCACC’s mission to ensure responsible, lawful arms trade practices that prioritize peace and human rights.

As the UDM, we are proud that our President’s principles of public service will now further benefit South Africa’s broader interests on an international level. We are confident that his contributions to the NCACC will be pivotal in guiding arms control policies that reflect South Africa’s commitment to ethical standards in the global arena.

The UDM remains supportive of Mr Holomisa’s leadership, knowing that his role on the NCACC will continue to inspire transparency, informed decision-making, and dedication to advancing South Africa’s standing as a peace-promoting nation.
