The United Democratic Movement Women’s Organisation (UDEMWO) notes with great disappointment that convicted murderer Oscar Pistorius will be a free man today. This is a travesty of justice.
This is just another example of where the law and justice systems favour criminals and another victim of violent crime in South Africa and their families are left to wonder at the justice this country metes out to criminals.
Having this man walk free with a monitoring device and having him merely attending anger management classes is a slap in the face of the memory of Reeva Steenkamp and that of her family.
Gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide in South Africa is out of control. Those who make themselves guilty of GBV and femicide should not receive a mere rap over the knuckles; our laws and parole systems are too lenient.
At this time UDEMWO’s thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Reeva Steenkamp. May her soul rest in peace.
