Note to editors: Herewith the soundbite by UDM SG, Yongama Zigebe, who issued the open letter

My fellow South Africans,

I write to you with a sense of urgency and optimism for a better future. Our beloved nation is at a crossroads, grappling with the weight of challenges that have besieged us for far too long. The upcoming 2024 National and Provincial Elections present an opportunity for us to pave a new path, to demand change, and to reclaim the integrity, dignity, and prosperity that we deserve.

To those who have continuously voted for the status quo, which is the very obvious ANC Comrades In Corruption, I urge you to reflect on the state of our nation. It is clear that the current trajectory is not leading us towards the South Africa we aspire to live in. The perpetuation of the status quo will only further entrench the challenges we face, from corruption to economic struggles, loadshedding, rising unemployment, inflation, and poverty. Your vote holds immense power, and it is imperative that you use it to usher in the change this country so desperately needs.

I sympathise with people who, feeling frustrated and angry, have decided not to cast a vote. While I acknowledge the injustices and disappointments you have experienced, I beg you to think about the long-term effects of disengaging. You unintentionally contribute to the continuation of the very problems that have stoked your rage by failing to use your right to vote. Your voice matters, and you can influence our country’s destiny by taking part in the electoral process.

I recognise the mistrust of the younger generation of South Africans who have become disenchanted with political parties due to their apparent similarities. But I implore you to recognise the strength of group effort. You hold the key to our nation’s destiny, and only by actively engaging in the political process can we establish a political environment that really reflects our goals and desires.

If we do not come together in a united cry for change, corruption’s rot will only deepen. The 2024 elections ought to mark a sea change in our country’s history, as we unite to cast our votes against the corruption and incompetence that have afflicted us for far too long. We need to stop being complacent and start advocating for the South Africa we want for present and future generations.

Let’s come together at this crucial crossroads and pledge to create a better tomorrow. Regardless of our disagreements, let’s demand accountability, transparency, and good governance by standing together. With steadfast optimism and resolve, our joint action will define our nation’s destiny and open the door to a brighter, more affluent South Africa.

Having stated all of this, do take note that November 18–19, 2023, is registration weekend for the upcoming National and Provincial Elections 2024, do go out in numbers to register and take charge of your future and generations to come.
