Statement by Zandile Phiri, Acting Secretary General of the United Democratic Movement

As we approach the festive season, the United Democratic Movement (UDM) is deeply concerned about the alarming increase in road accidents and gender-based violence (GBV) cases in our country.

Since December 1, 2024, there has been a tragic rise in road accidents, with the death toll already reaching 3% nationwide. Of these fatalities, nearly half (49%) involve pedestrians, highlighting the vulnerability of our communities during this time of heightened travel.

Equally concerning are the reports of escalating GBV cases circulating on social media, which continue to paint a grim picture of the state of safety and security in our society.

In this season of goodwill, the UDM calls on all South Africans to exercise extreme caution on the roads and to take collective action to end GBV. It is crucial that we look out for one another and work together to create a safer and more just society for all.

The UDM wishes all South Africans a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Let us cherish our loved ones and make this holiday season one of peace, safety, and compassion.
