The United Democratic Movement (UDM) is deeply saddened by the tragic event that unfolded in Margate, KwaZulu-Natal, following the recent severe storm. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families and loved ones of the five individuals who lost their lives, and our thoughts are with the two individuals who sustained injuries. We also think of the thousands of citizens who have to pick up the broken pieces in the aftermath of the storm.
The storm’s damage shows how urgent government, at all three tiers, need to implement full strategies for disaster preparedness and response and that our citizens are more aware of the implications of natural disasters in this day and age.
Given the magnitude of the storm, the UDM calls for intervention from government departments. It is important that support is extended to affected households, infrastructure is repaired, and assistance is provided to businesses that have been affected by the storm. We call on the government to provide the necessary support and resources to rebuild and recover from this devastating storm.
We furthermore call for increased investment in infrastructure to withstand the growing threat of extreme weather events linked to climate change. This includes upgrading critical infrastructure such as roads, drainage systems, and housing to cope better with the impact of future storms.
In times of need, it is important that we come together to support one another and rebuild stronger, more resilient communities. As the UDM, we are committed to advocating for the well-being of all our citizens.
