Statement by Yongama Zigebe, UDM Secretary General

The United Democratic Movement (UDM) commemorates Human Rights Day in South Africa, it is imperative to reflect on our journey, acknowledging strides made while confronting persistent challenges. South Africa’s history is marked by a relentless pursuit of justice, equality, and dignity for all its citizens. However, the realisation of these fundamental human rights is increasingly threatened by pervasive corruption, which undermines the fabric of our society.

Corruption has insidiously eroded the very essence of our human rights, manifesting in various forms detrimental to our collective well-being. High rates of crime persist, with communities feeling unsafe and vulnerable, robbed of their inherent right to security. Women continue to endure the scourge of abuse and rape, a harrowing violation of their rights to safety and bodily autonomy.

Moreover, the erosion of service delivery exacerbates social inequalities, depriving many of access to basic necessities such as clean water, housing, and healthcare. This lack of governance and accountability perpetuates a cycle of disenfranchisement, where the government fails to uphold its duty to serve and protect its citizens.

Regrettably, the rights of the LGBTQIA community remain marginalised and disregarded, subjected to discrimination, violence, and legal injustices. Their struggle for equality and acceptance underscores the pervasive nature of human rights violations in our society.

Additionally, the UDM stands in solidarity with all those advocating for human rights in South Africa. Together, we must address pressing issues such as the prevalence of pit latrines in schools, particularly in regions like Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Eastern Cape, where children’s lives are endangered due to inadequate sanitation facilities.

As we confront these challenges, we must reaffirm our commitment to upholding human rights for all. This entails fostering a culture of transparency, accountability, and ethical leadership at all levels of governance. It requires collective action to dismantle systems of oppression and discrimination, ensuring that every individual is treated with dignity and respect.

On this Human Rights Day, let us honour the sacrifices of those who fought tirelessly for justice and equality, and recommit ourselves to the ongoing struggle for a more just, inclusive, and rights-respecting society. Together, we can overcome the obstacles that hinder the realisation of our shared humanity and build a future where every person’s rights are safeguarded and upheld.
