Statement by Zandile Phiri, Acting Secretary General of the United Democratic Movement
The United Democratic Movement (UDM) wishes all South Africans a wonderful Heritage Day 2024 as the nation celebrates the lives of our heroes and heroines who laid down their lives for our freedom.
The UDM would like to reflect on the profound contributions of the women who played pivotal roles in the struggle for liberation in South Africa. The courageous women who fought for freedom, reminds us of their sacrifices, resilience, and unwavering determination in the face of oppression. These women, from different backgrounds and walks of life, were the heartbeat of the liberation movement, challenging injustice and inequality while paving the way for a democratic and just society.
Their legacy is not only a reminder of the long and difficult road to freedom but also a call for us to continue the fight for gender equality and empowerment today.
The plight of women in South Africa remains an area where advocating for gender equality and addressing issues like GBV, economic empowerment, and political participation still requires much attention and work.
Therefore, as we celebrate the contributions of the heroines of yesteryear, we must ensure that the rights and dignity of women in South Africa remain at the forefront of our national agenda.
Lastly, Heritage Day is more than a day of remembrance; it is a unifying factor for all South Africans. It offers an opportunity for each of us to embrace our diverse cultures, languages, and traditions. As a nation rich in heritage, we have a responsibility to come together, acknowledging the strength in our diversity and building bridges between communities.
