Statement by Bulelani Bobotyane, Provincial Secretary of the United Democratic Movement in the Eastern Cape

The United Democratic Movement (UDM) in the Eastern Cape is shocked by the brutal mass shooting in Qumbu, Eastern Cape, which has claimed the lives of six individuals who reportedly were members of the local community policing forum.

The ongoing violence, especially in vulnerable communities like Qumbu, highlights the fact that our people are still being held hostage by criminals.

The absence of proper policing and proactive measures are not only unacceptable but a betrayal of the people who rely on the government for protection. There is an urgent need for law enforcement to act decisively and consistently in the Eastern Cape to actively combat crime.

We demand immediate, visible police presence in Qumbu and surrounding areas, and a thorough investigation into this massacre. It is critical that law enforcement agencies demonstrate real leadership by swiftly apprehending those responsible for this heinous crime.

Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families of the victims and with the community of Qumbu.
