Statement by Zandile Phiri, Acting Secretary General of the United Democratic Movement

Gun crime in South Africa has reached levels reminiscent of the turbulent 1990s. These excessive acts of criminality continue to deeply impact communities across the country, eroding public safety and exacerbating trauma in vulnerable areas. The need to uproot such violence is urgent, as these incidents tear at the fabric of society.

Currently, it is estimated that there are 23.35 million licensed firearms in South Africa. However, the true danger lies in the substantial number of illegal firearms circulating through the black market, often due to theft, loss, or smuggling. These firearms fuel criminal activities despite the existence of robust gun control laws, as poor enforcement and systemic loopholes continue to undermine their effectiveness.

The recent mass shooting that took place on Friday night in Ngobozana village, Lusikisiki (Eastern Cape), where two homesteads on the same street were ruthlessly targeted, has left eighteen victims dead. This deeply worrying incident has shocked the nation and highlights the severity of the gun crime crisis in the country.

The United Democratic Movement (UDM) extends its heartfelt sympathies to the victims’ families and the broader community affected by this senseless act of violence. Our deepest condolences go out to the loved ones of those who lost their lives, and we recognise the profound trauma experienced by survivors and the local community.

The UDM commends the deployment of a team of specialist detectives and forensic experts to investigate this heinous crime. We urge them to work with diligence to bring the perpetrators to justice. Additionally, we encourage community members to cooperate fully with law enforcement to ensure that these criminals do not escape accountability.

To address gun crime effectively, we need comprehensive solutions that go beyond immediate law enforcement measures. These solutions must include socio-economic reforms, a focus on improving policing, and an urgent crackdown on the illegal circulation of firearms.

The UDM calls upon the Government of National Unity to make gun control a national priority in order to curb violent crime and restore safety in communities across the country. Without decisive action, the scourge of gun violence will continue to destabilise South Africa, with devastating effects for families and entire communities.
