Statement by Yongama Zigebe, Councillor in the City of Johannesburg for the United Democratic Movement

The United Democratic Movement (UDM) is deeply concerned about the ongoing hijacking of government-owned buildings, which has left vulnerable families—already traumatised by recent disasters—without proper shelter. Survivors of the tragic fire in Jeppestown, who were initially promised safe accommodation, continue to live in tents despite the City’s efforts to provide housing. This is an unacceptable situation, exacerbated by criminal elements taking over the very buildings meant to offer refuge.

We welcome the actions and decisive undertakings by Councillor Mlungisi Mabaso, MMC for Human Settlements, to ensure that those responsible for this criminality will be held accountable. His commitment to expediting the eviction process and holding all those involved in these illegal activities accountable is a positive step forward. The UDM fully supports this process, as it is critical to restoring dignity to those who have already suffered so much.

As a nation, we must prioritise the needs of our most vulnerable citizens. The hijacking of government buildings is a gross injustice that undermines the efforts to provide decent housing for displaced families. We urge all relevant authorities to act swiftly, ensuring the necessary refurbishments are carried out to make the buildings habitable and secure for the intended beneficiaries.

The UDM will continue to monitor the situation and stand with those affected, advocating for their immediate relocation to safe and dignified housing.
