Statement by Yongama Zigebe, Councillor in the City of Johannesburg for the United Democratic Movement

The United Democratic Movement (UDM) has carefully evaluated the Premier’s State of the Province Address delivered yesterday, which outlined an ambitious vision for our province’s future. While the UDM recognises the Premier Lesufi’s intentions, we must scrutinise these promises to ensure they translate into concrete actions that benefit every citizen. Below, we delve into the key aspects of the address, highlighting areas that require deeper commitment and action.

1. Infrastructure Development and Economic Growth:
The Premier emphasised the importance of infrastructure development as a catalyst for economic growth. The UDM agrees that robust infrastructure is vital for the province’s development. However, we caution against empty promises that often fail to materialise into real progress. We call for transparency and accountability in these projects, ensuring that they are delivered on time, within budget, and meet the highest quality standards. Prioritising local contractors and sustainable practices is essential to ensure that these projects contribute to long-term prosperity.

2. Social Services and Welfare:
The address highlighted improvements in social services, including healthcare and education. While progress is acknowledged, the UDM stresses the need for equitable access to these services across all regions, especially in rural and underdeveloped areas. It is unacceptable that many of our citizens still lack access to basic healthcare and quality education. We urge the provincial government to allocate resources more effectively, ensuring that no community is left behind.

3. Job Creation and Economic Inclusion:
The Premier’s job creation initiatives are crucial, especially in a province struggling with high unemployment rates. However, the UDM believes that a broader, more innovative approach is needed. Investing in technology, renewable energy, and small business development will create sustainable job opportunities. Moreover, economic inclusion must be at the forefront of these initiatives, ensuring that marginalised communities, including women, youth, and the disabled, are not left out of economic growth.

4. Governance, Transparency, and Accountability:
The UDM welcomes the Premier’s call for good governance and accountability. However, words alone are not enough. We demand stronger oversight mechanisms, independent audits, and full transparency in the management of public funds. Corruption must be eradicated at all levels of government, and those responsible must be held accountable. The UDM will continue to push for the highest standards of integrity in our provincial leadership.

5. Crime Prevention and Community Safety:
One of the most pressing issues facing our province is the high level of crime, which threatens the safety and well-being of our communities. The UDM acknowledges the Premier’s recognition of this challenge but insists that more decisive action is needed. Crime prevention must be a top priority, with a focus on both immediate and long-term strategies.

The UDM calls for a comprehensive crime prevention strategy that includes increasing the visibility of law enforcement in high-crime areas, strengthening community policing initiatives, and addressing the root causes of crime such as poverty, unemployment, and lack of education. We also advocate for more significant investment in youth development programs that provide alternatives to criminal activity. A safe province is a prosperous province, and we must do everything in our power to protect our citizens.

6. Addressing Challenges with Clear, Measurable Solutions:
While the Premier acknowledged the significant challenges facing our province, the UDM emphasises the need for clear, actionable solutions. It is not enough to identify problems; the government must present detailed plans with measurable outcomes. The UDM calls for the establishment of a monitoring task force to ensure that these plans are implemented effectively, and that progress is reported to the public regularly.

7. Community Involvement and Civic Responsibility:
The UDM supports the Premier’s call for community involvement but believes that meaningful engagement requires a government that is genuinely open to citizen participation. The UDM encourages all citizens to engage with local government structures, attend public forums, and hold their leaders accountable. The government must, in turn, provide accessible platforms for feedback and commit to addressing the concerns raised by the community.

Conclusion:
The UDM remains steadfast in its commitment to building a province that is not only prosperous but also just, safe, and equitable. We will continue to advocate for policies that uplift all our people and hold the government accountable for delivering on its promises. The challenges we face are significant, but with dedicated leadership, transparent governance, and active citizen participation, we can create a brighter future for all.
