Media Statement Article by Thandi Nontenja, UDEMWO Secretary General

The United Democratic Movement Women’s Organisation (UDEMWO) strongly condemns the shooting and killing of Johannesburg councillor Moshe Mphahlele. In today’s society, we cannot tolerate trigger-happy security forces, whether they are police officers or private security personnel. Moshe Mphahlele, a breadwinner in his family, was brutally robbed of his life due to his passionate beliefs.

We live in a democratic country where citizens should not face gunfire for making their desperation known. Such actions are deeply hurtful and serve as a painful reminder of a dark past that we must not return to.

The container residences have been vacant for several years, remaining unused, while the citizens of Alexandra are forced to live in makeshift shacks along the side of the road, which is particularly harsh during the very cold winter months.

The entire situation is courting trouble. While UDEMWO does not condone or encourage the invasion and illegal occupation of municipal property, the City must be sensitive to the dire need for housing in Alexandra. Our people’s unanswered, desperate need for housing is partly to blame for what has occurred.

UDEMWO calls on the Minister of Police to bring those responsible for the death of Moshe Mphahlele to justice immediately. The City of Johannesburg must answer questions as to why those container residences remain unoccupied.

UDEMWO extends our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones of Moshe Mphahlele during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace.
