The United Democratic Movement (UDM) disagrees with the irrational decision taken by COGTA Minister, Ms Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, to go ahead with the 2021 Municipal Elections on 27 October. This was communicated to the National Party Liaison Committee (NPLC) and the Electoral Commission of South Africa two days ago.
Vaccinating a minimum of 60% of the population will not take place by the 27th of October 2021. That is why the UDM proposes the date of 27 April 2022 as a safe date for the elections.
Every South African has lost a loved one, family member, colleague or friend to this deadly virus. Making many sacrifices by not attending funerals and visiting families – for it all to be thrown away on a political whim. The UDM will not entertain this irresponsible behaviour of disregarding crowd restrictions and gatherings.
The National Coronavirus Command Council must be realistic and explore the protection that South Africa’s Constitution provides in times of crisis.
A rethink by Honourable Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and her task team is necessary. The UDM proposes the 27th of April 2022 as this is another significant day in history of our election process.
