Debate By Cllr Yongama Zigebe on the Partnership Between the City of Johannesburg Human Settlements Department and Urban Development Property Company (Pty) Limited for the Development of Central Park for Social and Integrated Housing Development, at the Continuation of the 25th Ordinary Council Meeting of The City of Johannesburg Municipality, at Constance Bapela Council Chamber, Braamfontein, on behalf of the United Democratic Movement (UDM) and the Minority Governing Parties
I rise on behalf of the United Democratic Movement and the Minority Governing Parties to voice our unwavering support for the Central Park Social- and Integrated Housing Development—a transformative partnership between the City of Johannesburg’s Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development Property Company. This project, at its core, is not just about constructing homes; it is about laying the foundation for a future that is resilient, inclusive, and equitable—a future where every individual, regardless of their background, is afforded the opportunity to thrive.
Our city faces significant challenges, and housing is undoubtedly one of the most pressing. However, we believe that this project offers more than just a solution to a housing shortage. It embodies a vision for a more integrated society, where social and economic divisions are broken down and replaced by opportunities for all. The Central Park development is about creating a community—a community where access to opportunity is no longer determined by one’s postcode, but by the potential of every individual.
In a broader sense, this project addresses the urgent need for environmental sustainability. As we look to the future, we must consider how we can develop our cities in a way that reduces our environmental footprint while improving the quality of life for all residents. This development’s focus on a low-carbon infrastructure is a clear commitment to a greener, more sustainable Johannesburg. It is an investment not only in the present but in the future well-being of our children and the generations to come.
The social impact of this development will ripple far beyond bricks and mortar. It will uplift entire families, provide economic opportunities, and create a more just and equitable Johannesburg. It will transform lives and neighbourhoods by giving people the stability and dignity that come with a safe, secure, and affordable home.
In conclusion, we are not merely constructing buildings; we are constructing hope. Hope for our youth, for women, for people living with disabilities, and for every person who has felt marginalized or left behind. By supporting this project, we are choosing to invest in the future of Johannesburg—a future where opportunity is abundant, and no one is left behind.
Thank you.
